Susan Mills’ Studio

This weekend, I ventured out to an Open Studio held by Susan Mills in Bowdoin. Susan is a mixed media artist using felt, photography, found objects, natural materials, metal and more combined into finished work. About her work, Susan writes,

“My art is inspired by nature and by myth, by the physical world and the world of spirit. When I am working, I feel the same energy or essence that I experience when I visit ancient stone circles and touch a more sacred place. Once I begin to work, it is as though I am directly manipulating my dreams and visions, my search for meaning in the world and in my life. The objects I create are my way of recording my inner journey.”

Over the past several years, Susan has taught felt making classes in Bermuda and in California, but finds she prefers teaching at a local yarn shop and from her own studio. She works with both beginners and more advanced makers, and often starts beginners felting a seamless handbag, vessel, hat, or mittens. Susan is also the manager of Markings Gallery in Bath.

Susan has exhibited work at the Attleboro Museum of Art in Rhode Island, O’Farrell Gallery (now Bay View Gallery) in Brunswick, Maine Fiberarts in Topsham, Markings Gallery in Bath, Maine Center for Craft in West Gardiner, and at the University of Maine in Orono.
